Afghan Sun-Dried Kandahar Figs

Compact and loaded with nutrients, heirloom Kandahar figs are grown in one of the most remote regions in Afghanistan, where Ziba Foods sources these fruits from local farmers to support village economies. They have a warm sweetness and more flavor than Californian varieties, which local farmers preserve by allowing the figs to ripen naturally and sun-dry while still on the tree. Turn these figs into an easy compote by poaching them in simple syrup with a cinnamon stick and allspice berries, or pair with creamy or pungent cheeses on a cheese board.
